In 2008, during the last month of summer before high school begins, an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy learns what his family can't teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love your mom.
"Didi is an emotional coming-of-age film firmly rooted in the digital age. 13-year-old Chris Wang is in that awkward in-between age and the limbo of the summer before high school. He's distanced from his family and faced ordinary pains and pressures that come with being a teenager. It’s refreshingly honest and bittersweet in parts, as Chris relies on the internet to help him through his dilemmas such as how to kiss a girl and win over his crush. It blends the digital conversation and Chris’ homemade footage with the overarching narrative to feel like a nostalgic snapshot of 2008 that was culturally defined by flip phones and MySpace. Chris’ formative years are shaped by his friends, pop culture and the videos he consumes and creates. It will warm your heart, but also offer a relatable snapshot of making friends with the wrong crowd and the long-reigning shame found in teenage mistakes. It’s as moving as it is memorable, a must watch."
"What was it like growing up as a Taiwanese-American in 2008? Much the same as being a teenager at any time - or at least, at any time since the arrival of the internet. Gently crafted by writer/director Sean Wang, the story of Chris “Didi” Wang, whose desire to fit in with his American peers alienates him from his family and makes him turn to YouTube for life lessons, is full of funny, tender observations on coming of age in the digital age. At its heart, though, is a universally recognisable story, as Didi (Izaac Wang) slowly realises his mother Chungsing (an outstanding Joan Chen) is not a monster, but his most valuable friend."
