Since The Lion King was first released in 1994 it has become a Disney animated classic watched and rewatched by households all around the world. With its plot based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a killer soundtrack by Elton John and Hans Zimmer, and beloved side-kicks on both sides of the good and evil spectrum, the film was destined to succeed. Since its release, the Lion King has raised a pride of animated sequels, live-action remakes, spinoff television series, and even a beloved Broadway musical.

The Lion King movies and TV shows in order of release

The Lion King franchise is currently made up of three animated films, two TV series, and two live-action films. There are some additional TV films that function as longer episodes within the animated TV series, but for simplicity’s sake they should be understood to be included as parts of the series in this list. If you want to watch the Lion King movies and TV shows in chronological order, it’s best to start with the live-action prequel film about Simba’s father, Mufasa (once it is released on December 20, 2024). From there, dive into the story of how Timon and Pumba first met and follow their adventures in the series The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa. After that, you’re all set to watch the classic animated film The Lion King and/or its live-action counterpart of the same name.

After the original Lion King, check out the two animated sequels: The Lion King 1 ½ and the Lion King II: Simba’s Pride. The final station if you’re watching the Lion King in chronological order is the series The Lion Guard, which focuses on Simba and Nala’s son, Kion.
