In 2013, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions released the first terrifyingly novel instalment in the Purge franchise. Created by James DeMonaco, the films are explored the idea of a dystopian United States in which crime virtually does not exist — apart from one night a year when all crime, including murder and arson, is legal. Since the first film, four more instalments have been released alongside a two-season-long anthology series following different people’s stories of surviving Purge night in 2027.

The first Purge movie stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey as the heads of a wealthy family who, despite their high-tech security system, must fight to stay alive over Purge night.

The Purge movies in order of release:

The Purge: Anarchy stars Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, and Zoë Soul in a new Purge night story, this time focusing on a mother and daughter surviving the chaos in the streets. Election Year sees the return of Frank Grillo and stars Elizabeth Mitchell as presidential candidate running on an anti-Purge platform.

The First Purge is a prequel film that follows the original experiment on Staten Island that led to the establishment of the nation-wide Purge. Finally, Forever The Purge follows the story of a rogue hate group called The Forever After Purge, who attempt to continue the Purge after the night is up, targeting immigrants and the ultra wealthy.

How to watch the Purge movies in chronological order

In order to watch the Purge movies in order, it makes sense to start with the prequel film The First Purge, which is set in 2014. From there, the first Purge film following the Sandin family takes place in 2022, while Anarchy is set in 2023, and Election Year takes place in 2040. The final film, Forever The Purge, takes place between 2048 to 2049.
