So far, there are two Smile films in the franchise: the original from 2022 and the sequel from 2024. Here’s how to watch the Smile films in release and chronological order:
The first Smile follows the story of Rose (Sosie Bacon), a psychologist who witnesses the suicide of a patient who smiles unnervingly at her right before she commits the act. From then on, Rose is hounded by other smiling people, and comes to the conclusion she is being stalked by a ‘smile entity’, an evil being that feeds off of trauma whose curse can only be passed on to someone else when they witness the current curse carrier murder someone.
Given the big box office success and enthusiastic fan reception of the first film, a sequel, Smile 2, was commissioned and will be released in cinemas on October 18, 2024. The second film returns to the same premise, but this time with an almost entirely different cast, focusing on pop star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) as she is pursued by the ‘smile entity’ while on tour. The only character who returns in Smile 2 is that of Joel (Kyle Gallner), Rose’s police officer ex-boyfriend who witnessed what happened to her at the end of Smile.
