The Curse of the Black Pearl
Released in 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl marks Johnny Depp’s premiere as the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow. The film’s stellar cast also features Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann. Gore Verbinski directs from a screenplay by Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio.
Dead Man’s Chest
Captain Jack Sparrow’s escapades continue with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. The 2006 film sees Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom return, alongside Verbinski as director. Stellan Skarsgård, Bill Nighy, Jack Davenport, Kevin R. McNally and Jonathan Pryce also appear.
At World’s End
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) is Verbinski’s final entry to the Pirates franchise. Set a few months after Dead Man’s Chest, the third movie focusses on a mission to rescue Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones’ Locker.
On Stranger Tides
The Pirates movies were given a new look with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The 2011 film sees a host of new characters including Jack Sparrow’s former lover Angelica (Penelope Cruz). Ian McShane joins as infamous pirate Blackbeard in the Rob Marshall-directed film.
Dead Men Tell No Tales
Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth film in the franchise. Dead Men Tell No Tales is a standalone sequel to On Stranger Tides.
Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Ahead of On Stranger Tides’ release, Disney announced that the fifth and sixth Pirates films would be shot back-to-back. A sixth film has been in development since then, but faced many development setbacks.
Johnny Depp famously stated that he would not return after Disney removed him from the franchise ahead of the verdict of his defamation case against Amber Heard, but has since said he would consider returning if the project was worthwhile.
There have also been rumours of Ayo Edebiri starring in a reboot sequel film. She would reportedly play a character named Anne, based on real-life pirate Anne Bonny, replacing Johnny Depp as the face of the franchise. This has not been confirmed by Disney. Austin Butler has also been considered for a reboot film, as the franchise looks to promote a younger cast.
Pirates of the Caribbean Spin-Offs And Short Films
There have been a number of spin-offs discussed, in addition to the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film. One spin-off, announced in June 2020, had Margot Robbie set to star with Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) writing the screenplay. Robbie publicly stated that the film was no longer moving forward, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that it is still in development.
