Max IT prequel series sees the return of original director Andy Muschietti
Welcome to Derry season 1 is the upcoming season of the Max horror TV series from Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs.
What is the story of Welcome to Derry season 1?
This prequel series to Muschietti's successful IT films, released in 2017 and 2019 and based on Stephen King's celebrated novel, delves into the origins of Derry and the curse that plagues the town. The films follow the close-knit "Losers Club," with Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor) revealing Derry's history as a beaver trapping camp during the initial film. According to him, all 91 individuals who signed the Derry Township charter mysteriously disappeared during winter, with their abandoned clothes leading to the old well house. Pennywise, the monstrous clown responsible for the curse, resurfaces every 27 years to torment and brutally kill children.
Why was Welcome to Derry delayed?
Originally set to be released around Halloween of 2024, Welcome to Derry was ultimately delayed to the following year due to the dual-WGA and SAG-AFTRA Hollywood strikes in 2023.
Who worked behind-the-scenes of Welcome to Derry?
Directing multiple episodes of Welcome to Derry, including the pilot, is original director Andy Muschietti. He's previously directed the 2013 supernatural horror film Mama and The Flash in 2023. Collaborating with him in the writer's room is his sister, Barbara Muschietti, along with co-showrunners Jason Fuchs, who also co-produced IT Chapter Two, and Brad Caleb Kane, writer on Tokyo Vice. These four also take on the role of executive producers for the series, joined by Shelley Meals and original IT producers, Roy Lee and Dan Lin.
Who stars in Welcome to Derry?
Welcome to Derry season 1 stars Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, James Remar, Stephen Rider and Madeleine Stowe. Bill Skarsgård plays Pennywise the Clown, reprising his role from the IT movies.
