Synopsis

At the end of the Vietnam War, a North Vietnamese Captain deep undercover in the South Vietnamese army, is forced to flee to the United States. Living in the U.S in a group of South Vietnamese refugees, he continues to report back to the Viet Cong.

Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Sympathizer is an espionage-thriller series about an undercover North Vietnamese soldier who finds himself living in America with the South Vietnamese community after the Vietnam War. Even though the war is over, his work as a spy is far from finished.
Who is in The Sympathizer cast?
Australian-Vietnamese actor Hoa Xuande (Last King of the Cross) stars in The Sympathizer as ‘The Captain’. Fred Nguyen Khan plays Bon, with Taon Le as the General, Duy Nguyen as Man, Vy Le as Lana, and Alan Trong as Sonny.
Academy Award winner Robert Downey Jr (Oppenheimer, Chaplin) plays many different antagonistic characters throughout the miniseries, and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy) appears as Ms. Sofia Mori. The cast also features Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Kayli Tran, VyVy Nguyen, Scott Ly and Marine Delterme.
Who is the creative team behind The Sympathizer?
The Sympathizer is created by Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar for HBO. Park Chan-wook is one of South Korea’s most prominent directors, and won the Best Director at Cannes Film Festival for Decision to Leave. Park Chan-wook also directs episodes of The Sympathizer along with Marc Munden and Fernando Meirelles.
