The Sympathizer is a political thriller black comedy drama series created by Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar. Park is a critically acclaimed South Korean film director, screenwriter and producer, who also serves as a director of The Sympathizer series with Marc Munden and Fernando Meirelles. The Sympathizer is executive produced by Park, McKellar, Robert Downey Jr, Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell, Niv Fichman, Kim Ly, Ron Schmidt, Viet Thanh Nguyen and Jisun Beck. The show is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name and was filmed in the United States and Thailand.

Hoa Xuande leads the cast of The Sympathizer as the Captain. The Australian actor is of Vietnamese descent, and has previously appeared in Hungry Ghosts, Ronny Chieng: International Student and Cowboy Bebop. The cast also includes Fred Nguyen Khan as Bon, Toan Le as the General, Duy Nguyen as Man, Vy Le as Lana and Alan Trong as Sonny. Robert Downey Jr plays several antagonist roles throughout the series.

The Sympathizer also includes a large recurring cast, with Ky Duyen as the General’s wife, Madame, Sandra Oh as Ms. Sofia Mori, Kieu Chinh as the Major’s Mother, Kayli Tran as the Communist Spy, VyVy Nguyen as the Major’s wife, Scott Ly as Gunner Dao and Marine Delterme.
