Synopsis
The Monkey King tells an ancient Chinese folkloric tale
Based on the legendary Chinese tale ‘Journey to the West’, The Monkey King tells the story of a prideful primate on an epic quest. When the Dragon King steals his magical stick, the Monkey King must battle demons and Gods to recover his lost treasure. Along the way, he learns that his greatest foe is his own ego and only he can be the one to defeat it.

The Monkey King is an animated comedy movie produced by Pearl Studio for Netflix. Pearl Studio is a Chinese animation film production studio that is responsible for Abominable and Kung Fu Panda 3. The movie is produced by renowned Hong Kong filmmaker Steph Chow. The Monkey King is directed by Anthony Stacchi who is an experienced animator, storyboard artist, screenwriter, and film director. The animated adventure is written by Ron Friedman and Steve Bencich, the pair behind Chicken Little and Open Season.
Actor, writer, and stand-up comedian Jimmy O. Yang leads the cast. He is joined by Bowen Yang, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Jo Koy, Ron Tuan, and Hoon Lee who all lend their voice to the movie. Stephanie Tsu and BD Wong also feature in this action-packed family adventure. The Monkey King was released on Netflix on August 18th, 2023.
