Christopher Nolan has become one of the most acclaimed directors in cinematic history, most recently striking Hollywood gold with his biopic Oppenheimer. Nolan’s directorial debut was the indie film Following. The crime thriller centers on a young author who is desperate for inspiration so he begins following strangers to spy on their lives. Before long, he finds himself in the middle of a murderous crime scheme between a mob boss and his lover.
Nolan’s next movie was Memento, an indie film that turned into a sleeper hit and ultimately launched the director’s career. Memento follows a man with amnesia who tries to track down his wife’s murderer. After scoring rave reviews at film festivals around the world, Memento earned Nolan his first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Throughout the 2000s, Nolan made other successful films like Insomnia and The Prestige, but what really thrust him into the spotlight was his Dark Knight trilogy. After Batman had received a series of zany, comic book-like movies throughout the ‘90s, Nolan’s films were dark, gritty, and showed the true underbelly of Gotham City. The real highlight of the series was The Dark Knight, which featured Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance as the Joker.
At the time of its release in 2009, The Dark Knight became the fourth highest-grossing movie ever, earning over a billion dollars at the box office. The following year, Nolan directed another massive hit, Inception. Starring an ensemble cast that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Inception went on to be nominated for 8 Oscars. It would remain Nolan’s most Oscar-nominated film until his epic 2023 hit Oppenheimer.
His historical biopic tells the story of the creation, deployment, and aftermath of the atomic bomb and the lasting impacts it had on physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who oversaw the bomb’s development. The movie went on to score a massive 13 Oscar nominations, making it one of the most-nominated films in history. It ultimately won a whopping seven awards including Best Picture and Best Director for Nolan. Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. additionally won their respective acting awards.
True Nolan fans might also want to watch Man of Steel. Though Nolan didn’t direct the movie, he did help out with writing and producing duties.
