Robert Downey, Jr. is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor von Doom (a.k.a. Doctor Doom). Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man) first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1962. Over the years, he quickly became one of Marvel’s most popular characters with his artificial heart, iron suit, and playboy antics, making him a flawed hero that readers couldn’t help but like. He first started appearing in film in 2006 in the first three direct-to-video Marvel Animated Features. By 2008, he made his live-action debut in Iron Man, with Downey portraying him.

The film kickstarted the MCU and tells the hero’s origin story as Stark, a billionaire industrialist, is forced to construct a suit of armor to escape the terrorists holding him captive. Once home, he employs the help of James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Terrence Howard) and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) to fight crime and terrorism. The film is often credited with reinventing the superhero genre as it mixed comedy and action, provided viewers with larger-than-life heroes and mesmerizing visuals, and paved the way for a shared universe.

By 2012, Downey’s Iron Man appeared in the MCU’s first major crossover movie, The Avengers. In the film, he is recruited to Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) superhero team, the Avengers, alongside Earth’s other mightiest heroes including Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Stark takes on a mentorship role to Peter Parker (Tom Holland).

His films culminated in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, in which countless Marvel heroes team up to stop Thanos (Josh Brolin) from using the Infinity Stone to wipe out half of Earth’s population. Downey’s career as Stark concluded with Avengers: Endgame, although Iron Man’s legacy remains vital to the shared universe.

The Terminator

In The Terminator, robots take over the world in the future, but humans have a fighting chance at winning the war thanks to their fearless leader, John Conner. To prevent that from happening, the machines send an android, the T-800 (Schwarzenegger), back to 1984 to kill John’s mother Sarah (Linda Hamilton) before she can give birth to the resistance leader. Luckily, the Terminator is destroyed and Sarah survives.

T2: Judgement Day

In Judgement Day, John is now a teenager living in LA while Sarah is trapped in a mental institution for insisting that Judgement Day is coming. The robots once again send an android from the future to kill John, this time the T-1000, but Schwarzenegger’s Terminator also returns to the past, this time to protect John and Sarah.

Terminator 3: Judgment Day

In Terminator 3, John is now grown up…but he’s once again pursued by an android from the future who wants to kill him. Thankfully, Schwarzenegger appears again to save him. But this time around, we learn something devastating. The robot uprising is inevitable, and the goal was never to help John prevent Judgement Day…only to ensure he survives it.

Terminator Salvation 

Set in the future, Salvation finally took audiences to the dystopian wasteland that remains during the war against the machines. John is now played by Christian Bale and he fights for the remnants of humanity against the machine overlords.

Retconned Terminator Entries 

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

The first retcon to the franchise was The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The show ignored all the events after T2 and picked up shortly after where the film left off. Throughout the series, Sarah and John fight to stop Skynet, hoping to prevent the robot uprising. Naturally, they’re pursued by androids along the way.

Terminator Genisys

Terminator Genisys is kind of a standalone story that creates its own timeline. In the movie, a human soldier from the future is sent back to protect Sarah Conner (just like in the first film), but he accidentally time-travels to an alternate past where Sarah has already met The Terminator and the two are working together to fight Skynet.

Terminator: Dark Fate

The big selling point of Dark Fate was the return of Linda Hamilton reprising her role of Sarah Connor. The movie ignores everything after T2 and follows Sarah as she continues to fight for humanity. The movie involves lots of time jumps and there are a few kinda-sorta inconsistencies that imply there might be alternate universes in play as well.

Terminator Zero

Terminator Zero is a standalone story that retcons most of the Terminator series. The show shifts between 1990 and the approaching Judgement Day in 1997. The series is set in Japan, so it’s possible that the events simply coincide with what happens in America during the film series – but considering that Judgement Day happens in 1997, T2, Terminator 3, and Salvation are for sure not part of this new timeline.

After over 14 years, The Chronicles of Narnia is expected to return to the screen, with Netflix preparing to reboot the franchise. The Chronicles of Narnia began as a wildly popular seven-book children’s series by C.S. Lewis, which told stories about the fantastical realm of Narnia.

Lewis’ books were adapted to television multiple times. A black-and-white miniseries based on Lewis’ first book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, premiered in 1967. Sadly, all but two episodes of the series have been lost. In 1979, animator Bill Melendez, best known for his work on Peanuts animated specials, directed an animated adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. However, it struggled under the limitations of animation at the time.

The first adaptation to come close to capturing the magic of the books was BBC’s TV series, The Chronicles of Narnia. It consisted of three TV serials — The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Silver Chair — which adapted the first four novels in Lewis’ series. The series earned high critical acclaim for its charming, modest glimpse into the fantasy world, focusing more on imagination and the book’s themes than grand visuals.

By the 2000s, Lewis’ estate finally felt confident technology had advanced enough to do justice to his work and sold Walden Media the film rights to the books. In 2005, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe premiered. The movie follows Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes), and Lucy Pevensie (Georgia Henley), four children who are evacuated from London during World War II and find themselves in a new home with a portal to Narnia, where they join forces with King Aslan (Liam Neeson) to fight the White Witch (Tilda Swinton).

The movie was faithful to the source material and an ambitious and visually appealing fantasy film for the whole family. Given its success, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian soon followed. In the sequel, the four Pevensie children are pulled back to Narnia to help Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) overthrow King Miraz (Sergio Castellito). The sequel was followed by a third movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, in which Edmund (Keynes), Lucy (Henley), and their cousin Eustace Scrubb (Will Poulter) embark on another adventure to Narnia.

Neither of the sequels was as big a box office hit as the original, but they all performed moderately well critically and commercially. However, Walden Media ran into an issue after the third film when its contract with Lewis’ estate expired. Two planned sequels, The Magician’s Nephew and The Silver Chair, ultimately never happened. Fortunately, Netflix appears to be moving ahead with its reboot, with Greta Gerwig attached to direct at least one of the Narnia movies.

Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetle… wait, I probably shouldn’t say it three times. If you’re a Beetlejuice fan, you know why. First up was the fantastically bizarre 1988 film Beetlejuice, directed by Tim Burton. In the movie, a recently deceased couple finds out that a pretentious family from the city has moved into their old home. When that fails, they discover there’s a “bio-exorcist” who specializes in scaring off humans. That would be Beetlejuice, who is portrayed by Michael Keaton in one of the best roles of his career. Without giving away any spoilers, let’s just say the plan goes wildly off the rails. The movie also starred Winona Ryder as Lydia and Catherine O’Hara as her mom, Delia.

Thanks to the success of the film, Beetlejuice then got his own spin-off cartoon, also titled Beetlejuice. The show ran from 1989-1991, producing 94 episodes. This time around, Beetlejuice and Lydia are friends and in each episode they find themselves on different adventures, both in the real world and spirit realm. The series took Burton’s already crazy and fun style and bonked it up another ten degrees, giving the cartoon the feel of being part-Beetlejuice, part-Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and part-circus. The series was exciting and funny, and many remember watching it as kids, so fans will love checking it out again for the nostalgia factor.

Then the franchise went silent for decades until 2018 when the Beetlejuice musical premiered in DC. It made its way to Broadway the following year and earned 8 Tony Award nominations. Then, in 2020 Beetlejuice found himself back on TV, starring in the Teen Titans Go! Halloween episode “Ghost With the Most” (Episode 23, Season 6). In the episode, Beetlejuice helps the Titans save the Halloween Spirit from supernatural entities by using his trademark tricks. Digimon was created in 1997 as a series of virtual pet-raising toys similar to Tamagotchi. The toys became a smash hit in Japan and across Asia, eventually leading to an entire Digimon universe. More Digimon series were released throughout the 2000s like Frontier and Data Squad, but unless you were a massive fan of the franchise, they pretty much flew under the radar outside of Japan. Then, in 2020 the franchise rebooted the original Digimon Adventure series. It was met with mixed reviews with many complaining that the elements of friendship and teamwork had been left out in favor of more battle scenes and a generic hero story. But fans who want a more action-packed series should check it out.

The most recent entry is Digimon Ghost Game, which aired from 2021-2023. The series took Digimon to its darkest (and arguably coolest) realm yet. The new series involves a type of ghost Digimon that can only be seen when using a special device. The show, along with the 2022 video game Digimon Survive, was both praised and criticized. Those looking for the nostalgic vibe of the original show felt no connection to the new series, but fans who were open to the new darker, creeper, and more edgy take found the show to be unique and fresh.

In the comics, Blade is a half-human, half-vampire who uses his unique physiology to become a vampire hunter and rid the world of all vampires. His first screen appearance was in the animated Spider-Man (1994) TV show as a supporting character. However, he gained much more recognition from New Line Cinema’s Blade franchise.

The franchise started in 1998 with the release of Blade, which saw Wesley Snipes in the titular role. The show was canceled after one season. Meanwhile, New Line Cinema wouldn’t have much time to explore Blade further as Marvel Studios reclaimed the rights to the character in 2012.

Since gaining the rights to him, the MCU has begun developing its Blade reboot, which is set to premiere on November 7, 2025. In the meantime, Blade has appeared twice in other MCU works. Ali debuted as Blade in a voice cameo at the end of Eternals, while Snipes reprised his role as a variant of Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine.

In 2002, a new animated movie took the world by storm. Despite Pixar and DreamWorks absolutely dominating the animation industry, an outlier film was released, ultimately grossing over $383 million, proving that it was a real contender amongst the great animated movies of the time. The Ice Age franchise follows three friends who navigate life during the ice age – Manny the mammoth (Ray Romano), Sid the ground sloth (John Leguizamo), and Diego the saber-toothed tiger (Dennis Leary) – as well as the hilariously nut-obsessed saber-toothed squirrel, Scrat.

Throughout the films, the group makes even more friends, like Ellie the mammoth (Queen Latifah), and the possum brothers Crash and Eddie (Sean William Scott and Josh Peck). In the third movie, audiences also meet Buckminster “Buck” Wild (Simon Pegg) who eventually got his own spin-off sequel in 2022.

Even better, the Ice Age franchise was made in chronological order, so there’s no prequels or wonky film orders to remember, it’s all perfectly ordered by release date. Here’s how the chronology looks:

However, while the series was released chronologically, the factual chronology of the franchise makes absolutely no sense. For example, by the time the ice age came around (about 2 million years ago) the continents had already shifted into the relative positions they’re in now and the dinosaurs had long been extinct for millions of years. So the fact that Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Continental Drift take place after the first film is historically very inaccurate. But… so is a franchise based around three talking animals, so let’s just accept Ice Age for what it is. A pretty factually flawed, but extremely fun and entertaining film franchise.

Eragon

Eragon is a fantasy movie that follows a farm boy, Eragon (Ed Speelers), who sets off on an adventure after discovering a coveted dragon egg. The Bear broke a record and has become the most-nominated comedy series at a ceremony, scoring 23 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actor for Jeremy Allen White, and even Outstanding Guest Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis. FX also scored big with Shogun, which leads the ceremony with the most total nominations – earning an impressive 25, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress for Anna Sawai, and Outstanding Lead Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, among many others.

Apple TV+ also had a surprisingly strong year, with shows like Palm Royale and Loot scorning nominations. But the streamer’s big hit this year was The Morning Show, which scooped up tons of nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Actress for both Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon – as well as a staggering 10 nominations for its supporting and guest roles thanks to talented stars like Marcia Gay Harden, Jon Hamm, and Holland Taylor.

The movie has some great performances by stars like Wanda Sykes, Johnny Knoxville, and Tom Kenny who once again reprises his role as SpongeBob.

The Umbrella Academy (August 8) – Netflix’s popular sci-fi superhero series returns for its fourth and final season. With an ensemble cast led by Elliot Page and Tom Hopper, the show has become one of Netflix’s biggest original series, so fans should definitely tune in for its epic conclusion.

The Union (August 16) – Everyman Mark Wahlberg gets recruited (well, kidnapped) to help a secret organization known as The Union after a data leak reveals the identities of spies across the globe. The spy comedy also stars Halle Berry and J.K. Simmons.

Terminator Zero (August 29) – In this new animated series, the plot shifts between 1997 and 2022, showing humanity’s struggles after Judgement Day (2022) and the fight to prevent it (1997). A soldier goes back in time to change the future and prevent the war… but is it too late?

Predator 

No, Alien and Predator were not made by the same people nor were they originally in the same cinematic universe. But the two franchises just blend together perfectly. So perfect in fact that they’ve even created an entire Alien vs. Predator franchise. If you love the Alien movies, trust me, you need to watch Predator. It’s an absolute must.

Event Horizon

Alien’s famous tagline was “In space no one can hear you scream,” and the movie was lauded for creating great tension by utilizing the depths of space to make the crew of the Nostromo completely stranded and helpless. Event Horizon utilizes a similar setting, this time on a spaceship that’s literally been to hell and back…and it’s brought a few stragglers back with it.

The Thing

One of the best (and scariest) parts about Alien is the horrifying xenomorph. If you want some more terrifying (and totally gross) morphing alien carnage, you need to watch John Carpenter’s classic The Thing. In the movie, a group is stranded in an Antarctic base, but they discover they’re not alone. A parasitic alien is able to infect hosts and take their shape, or turn them into monstrous creatures. The Thing is 100% body horror, and will definitely make your skin crawl.

The Fourth Kind

Set in Alaska, The Fourth Kind presents a first-contact movie where Milla Jovovich is victimized by extraterrestrial forces. The movie had a brilliant marketing campaign that purported the story to be true, even fabricating news articles online and claiming that the very real Chapman University had conducted the studies. For a totally unique take on an alien movie, you gotta watch The Fourth Kind.

Dead Space: Downfall

Based on the popular video game series (which is partly inspired by Event Horizon which is also on this list), Dead Space: Downfall centers around a space crew that discovers a mysterious artifact on an alien planet. After bringing it aboard their ship, something evil comes with it and begins killing everyone. Yeah, it’s a lot like Alien and that’s exactly why you’re gonna love it. There was also a follow-up with Dead Space: Aftermath.

NOPE

One of the more modern alien films is Jordan Peele’s NOPE. The movie has lots of undertones, like society’s obsession with filming everything and our determination to domesticate wild animals – but it’s also a terrifying alien movie about a giant flying creature that becomes territorial and feeds on humans. Yikes.

Sunshine

Long before Cillian Murphy and Michelle Yeoh became Oscar winners, they starred in Danny Boyle’s Sunshine. The movie focuses on a space expedition to the sun, where a group of astronauts need to deploy a bomb to reignite the dying star and save Earth. But someone (or something) begins killing off the crew one by one before they can complete their mission… but why? Sunshine was a sleeper hit that’s since become a cult classic thanks to its visceral setting and great story.

Underwater

Underwater is kind of like “Alien in the ocean”. In the movie, a team of aquanauts encounter Lovecraftian monsters at the bottom of the sea and they’re forced to fight for their survival. If you love the terror of deep space, you’ll also be terrified by the blackness and bleakness of the ocean’s depths.

Leviathan

Blending Underwater and The Thing together is 1989’s Leviathan. Complete with chest-bursting and all, the movie truly does feel like an underwater version of Alien. Plus, the movie used practical effects instead of CGI, so any practical effects fans will definitely love this undiscovered gem. That same year an almost identical film was released called DeepStar Six that Alien fans will also love.

Life

Set in the near future, Life centers around a crew of astronauts who discover the first proof of extraterrestrial life. Like all good alien movies, the creature is xenomorphic and parasitic, quickly utilizing the astronauts as a food source. The film also starred some surprisingly big names like Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal.

After a seven-year hiatus, the Alien franchise is returning to the big screen with Alien: Romulus. Before delving into the next installment, viewers may wish to catch up with the prior films in the horror sci-fi franchise. This guide will explain how to watch the Alien movies in order and where you can stream all the movies online!

The Alien franchise began in 1979 with the release of Alien from director Ridley Scott. It follows the crew of the spacecraft Nostromo, including warrant officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), Captain Dallas (Tom Skerritt), and executive officer Kane (John Hurt), who are on their way home from a mission in deep space. However, they soon find themselves fighting for survival when an alien species (later identified as Xenomorphs) infiltrates their ship.

Although Alien received mixed reviews upon release, it was reassessed and is now considered one of the greatest sci-fi horror movies ever. The blend of horror and sci-fi, the strong female lead in Sigourney Weaver, and the chilling and dreadful premise were groundbreaking. Additionally, the scene where the alien emerges through Kane’s chest is considered one of cinematic history's most iconic scenes.

Sigourney Weaver returned for the 1986 sequel, Aliens, with James Cameron signing on to direct. The film sees Ripley return to the original site of the attack on Nostromo after another ship goes dark while in the area. Aliens did what few sequels accomplish and came to be considered equal to or greater than Alien in quality, thrilling viewers with its exploration of a Queen Xenomorph and further character development of Ripley.

Weaver returned for Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, but the franchise started losing momentum. Alien 3 was criticized for undoing the Aliens' ending, while Alien Resurrection had a convoluted script. Hence, the next Alien film would diverge from the original movies and start a new crossover franchise with Predator.

Original Alien director Ridley Scott was vehemently against the crossover and eventually received the green light to revive the franchise with two prequel films, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. The prequel introduced archeologists Elizabeth (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie (Logan Marshall-Green) and android David (Michael Fassbender), who run into a deadly alien species while attempting to track the origin of humanity.

While the prequels didn’t entirely eclipse the original movie and its sequel, they received relatively positive reviews. They revitalized the franchise, raising excitement for Alien: Romulus, which will take viewers back to the time of the original films.

Viewers can either watch the Alien movies in chronological or release date order. Chronological order is fairly simple, as it is the Predator vs. Alien movies, followed by the prequels and original series. Set in the 1910s with an awesome steampunk and Jules Verne aesthetic, the movie follows an expedition under the sea to uncover the lost city of Atlantis. Once there, they meet the Atlantians who harness an incredible power thanks to their symbiotic relationship with their environment. As always…the visitors then become invaders when it’s revealed they actually came for resources and treasures.

District 9

One of the themes Avatar touches on is the way that humans don’t value the Na’vi or their land because they’re perceived as the “other” and thus not worthy of any rights. Taking this idea to the extreme was District 9, where an alien race is held captive in South African internment camps. The movie was heavily inspired by the apartheid and if you loved Avatar’s underlying messages, you will appreciate the way District 9 comments on race, colonialism, and the abuse of civil liberties.

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

In Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, the Empire has invaded the remote moon of Endor to build a shield generator – taking over the Ewoks’ home planet and destroying the environment in the process. Luckily, the Rebellion teams up with the Ewoks to reclaim their planet and save the galaxy. Just like the Na’vi must save their planet from humans, viewers will find lots of similarities in the Battle of Endor.

At its core, Avatar is a first-contact film, where humans work to navigate their encounter with the Na’vi. Just as humans arrive on Pandora in search of “unobtanium” in Avatar, The Fountain tells of humanity’s search for The Tree of Life, echoing the way Europeans used to believe the Fountain of Youth was hidden somewhere in the Americas. Like the humans in Avatar, who are desperate for power and resources, The Fountain tells of the search for something even greater: Immortality.

Tarzan

In a lot of ways, Tarzan is kind of like the Na’vi in Avatar. He’s grown up living with nature, utilizing it as his home, instead of just as a place that can be mined and logged. When he finally makes human contact, many of the same scenarios in Avatar happen, and the movie ultimately asks who is the true savage – the person living with nature, or the people who wish to destroy it.

Strange World

If you loved Avatar for its stunning colors and exotic planetary landscape, you’ll love Strange World. Heavily inspired by Journey to the Center of the Earth, the movie follows a family who must search for a new energy source… but in the process, they learn about the fragile balance that holds the environment in equilibrium. The movie 2012 capitalized on this fear by showing the world getting destroyed by a series of natural disasters… in the year 2012, with only a chosen few being saved by giant “arks”.

Into the Storm

Into the Storm very much feels like a spiritual sequel to Twister. The movie takes place in a small Oklahoma town where a cluster of tornadoes have touched down, creating the largest storm in the state’s history. There’s also fire tornadoes and even a massive mile-wide F-5 that flattens the town. The hyperactive storm makes the movie feel less believable than Twister, but a bigger storm means more chaos and more destruction…and isn’t that what a disaster movie is all about?

The finale of the trilogy is MaXXXine, which jumps forward in time and sees Goth returning to her role as Maxine. Set in LA during the ‘80s, Maxine looks to break into Hollywood, but little does she know she’s being stalked by one of the city’s most infamous serial killers: The Night Stalker.

Another major horror credit for Mia Goth is the Sundance hit Infinity Pool. The movie takes place in a bizarre, fictional foreign country where tourists can literally get away with murder by cloning themselves and forcing the clone to receive the punishment. Much like the movie Hostel, this brings out the most brutal and horrific side of people and the film becomes a complete bloodbath.

But horror isn’t all Mia Goth is known for. In 2020 she starred alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in the film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. The movie is a pulpy, Regency-era British dramedy about the young Emma and her misadventures in life and love. Though the movie was far from the first film adaptation of Emma, it was praised for its costume design and the cast’s performance.

But before any of her major roles, Mia Goth earned herself a small part in the disaster epic Everest in 2015. The movie retells the tragic story of the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster where dozens of people on the mountain became lost and disoriented during a massive blizzard, resulting in 9 deaths. The movie starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Robin Wright, and Keira Knightley among others.

Star Wars and Star Trek have been rivals for decades, but oftentimes fans of one franchise are also fans of the other – and it’s clear to see why. Star Trek also follows a group (in this case, Starfleet) who traverse the universe defending it from evil and working to restore peace and order. The main difference is that Star Wars is more centered on an epic war, whereas Star Trek is more about preventing a widespread war.

Guardians of the Galaxy

In Guardians of the Galaxy, a ragtag group of misfits are brought together by chance and try to save the galaxy in a clunky old ship. If that isn’t 50 Shades of Star Wars, then I don’t know what is. The movie has since spawned two sequels, a holiday special, two Disney rides, and is known for its great soundtrack and fun action.

Spaceballs

If you’re a Star Wars fan, it’s basically a sin to not watch Spaceballs. Written and directed by Mel Brooks (he also has a few roles in the film), Spaceballs is the ultimate Star Wars spoof. Why have Jabba the Hutt when you can have Pizza the Hutt? And why have Yoda when you can have Yogurt? Spaceballs also has a fantastic comedic cast including John Candy, Joan Rivers, and Rick Moranis.

Hardware Wars

If Spaceballs is a little too high-budget for your tastes and you want some seriously niche fan-made hilarity, you need to watch Hardware Wars. Han Solo is now “Ham Salad” and the Millennium Falcon is replaced by a flying iron. Hardware Wars is a wildly hilarious no-budget ‘70s spoof of Star Wars that I promise will make you laugh (especially if you’re watching with a few friends and a few drinks).

Titan A.E.

In Titan A.E., Earth has been destroyed by aliens, forcing what’s left of humanity to live as refugees in whatever dingy galactic outposts they can find. But the secret to human survival is hidden out in the cosmos and it’s up to an eclectic team of characters to find it. Titan A.E. is a great animated alternative to Star Wars and has a kickin’ soundtrack that includes Lit, Powerman 5000, and Luscious Jackson.

Treasure Planet

Another great animated sci-fi epic is Treasure Planet. The movie is a galactic remake of the classic Treasure Island tale and follows Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who joins a motley crew to search the universe for treasure. The plot stays mostly the same as Treasure Island, but its new space setting makes it fun and unique.

Wing Commander

Based on the ‘90s video game series that eventually starred Mark Hamill (see, there’s already a Star Wars connection), Wing Commander centers around the intergalactic war between humans and a feline-like alien race known as the Kilrathi. Upon its premiere, the movie was a total bomb, but in recent years viewers have come to love its campy oddity – very much in the same style as Star Wars’ own kitschy charm.

Starship Troopers 

Robert Heinlein’s original 1959 novel Starship Troopers was a swampy mess of pro-fascism and pro-war philosophy… but all told from a pro-America viewpoint. Unlike Heinlein, who never actually saw war, director Paul Verhoeven was born in Nazi-occupied Netherlands and set out to make his film version of Starship Troopers a complete rebuke of Heinlein’s worldview. The film is a total mockery of the pro-war crowd and shows that with war, there’s only one result: death and destruction, there is no winner. For a great space opera that has one hell of an underlying message, this is a must-watch.

Serenity

Picking up after the events of the cult-favorite TV series Firefly, Serenity brought back much of the original cast like Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, and Summer Glau. The film follows the crew of the Serenity as they navigate the galaxy, trying to defeat the evil Reavers. It kind of feels like one giant episode of Firefly, which if you’re a Star Wars fan, is a great thing.

Blue Harvest

Blue Harvest (Season 6) was a double episode-length Family Guy special that parodied Star Wars. Peter took the role of Solo, while Lois played Leia. Other iconic characters joined in too, with Quagmire playing C-3PO. Two more Star Wars specials followed with Something, Something, Something Darkside (Season 8) and It’s a Trap! (Season 9). Even if you’re not a Family Guy fan, the Star Wars specials are still really enjoyable.
