Scary Movie Franchise in Chronological Order
Scary Movie
The original movie centered around a group of high school students (including Cindy, who is a spoof of Scream’s Sidney) who are stalked by a masked killer. The main influence for the original film was Scream, but it also spoofed classics like I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Sixth Sense, and Halloween.
Scary Movie 2
The sequel was mainly inspired by The Haunting and House on Haunted Hill and sees Cindy and her friends invited to a haunted house where they experience strange phenomena. Other movies spoofed in the sequel include The Exorcist, The Matrix, and Charlie’s Angels.
Scary Movie 3
The third film was mainly inspired by Signs and The Ring and focuses on an alien invasion…and a cursed video tape that tells people they’ll die in seven days. The movie also poked fun at classics like Airplane! And 8 Mile, and because of that, it featured tons of rapper cameos by RZA, Redman, and more.
Scary Movie 4
Scary Movie 4 was the last to star Anna Faris as Cindy, and the movie was mainly inspired by The Grudge. But it also poked fun at horror films like Saw and The War of the Worlds, as well as other popular movies from the era like Brokeback Mountain and Million Dollar Baby.
Scary Movie 5
Ashley Tisdale took over the starring role for the fifth movie, which was heavily inspired by Paranormal Activity and Black Swan. But it also spoofed films like Evil Dead and Insidious. Released in 2013, it’s the most recent Scary Movie film to date, though there is a sixth film in the early stages of pre-production.
