Arnold Schwarzenegger began his bodybuilding career in the early ‘60s and went pro by the end of the decade. Soon after, he was transitioning into film. His first major role was in 1976’s Stay Hungry, and he even ended up winning a Golden Globe for the role. But Schwarzenegger became an international sensation with the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian. In the movie, Schwarzenegger plays the iconic Conan, a young slave in a fantasy realm who decides to get revenge against his captor.
Throughout the ‘80s, Schwarzenegger continued starring in mega-hit blockbusters, including portraying the famed robotic killing machine in The Terminator. He also starred in films like Commando and Predator, where he fought off an alien hunter in the jungles of Central America.
Both The Terminator and Predator became massive hits and in 1991, Schwarzenegger returned as the T-800 Terminator in James Cameron’s epic, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. This time around, the T-800 robot isn’t sent to kill, and instead, he’s tasked with saving John Connor. T2 didn’t just go on to be considered better than the first, it’s also seen as one of the best action movies of the whole decade.
On top of his career as an action star, Schwarzenegger has also starred in quite a few notable comedies as well. Throughout the ‘90s, he starred in hits like Kindergarten Cop, Jingle All the Way, and Junior, which earned Schwarzenegger his second Golden Globe nomination.
