12 Years a Slave director brings the story of Shirley Chisholm to the screen for Netflix
Shirley is an American biopic produced by Royal Ties Productions and Participant Media for Netflix. The film is based on the real life of Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to congress in the US. Her estate reached an exclusive agreement with the studios and filmmakers and supplied important details about her life. The film is written and directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker John Ridley, who is known for writing 12 Years a Slave, Ben Hur, and Red Tails.
Multi-award-winning actress Regina King steps into the role of Shirley Chisholm. King is known for her roles in The Harder They Fall, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Watchmen. She is joined by Andre Holland (Selma, Moonlight), the late Lance Reddick, Terrence Howard, W. Earl Brown, Christina Jackson, and Lucas Hedges.
