The narrative follows their struggle to stay alive, with some resorting to cannibalism. Additionally, the series explores the lives of the survivors 25 years later in 2021, highlighting the lasting effects of their traumatic experience.
Yellowjackets is not based on a true story. However, its narrative shares similarities with the real-life Uruguayan Air Force flight 571 disaster in 1972 which was depicted in Netflix's Academy Award-nominated Society of the Snow.
Co-creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson previously worked on such titles as Narcos and Narcos: Mexico. Yellowjackets has been nominated for several Primetime Emmy Awards throughout its run including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nominations for Melanie Lynskey and Christina Ricci.
