The series revolves around the Abbott family which consists of patriarch Royal, his wife Cecilia, sons Perry and Rhett and Perry’s daughter, Amy. The family lives on a vast Wyoming ranch neighboring the Tillersons' property. Tensions flare over the property line, particularly concerning Royal's west pasture, sparking disputes between Perry and Trevor Tillerson. Trevor's cruel jabs about Perry's absent wife only fuel the conflict. A mysterious drifter named Autumn arrives one day, inexplicably drawn to the Abbotts' land. Her addition creates another layer of intrigue to the unfolding story.

Outer Range marked Watkins' debut as a lead showrunner for television; he wrote multiple episodes in the first season. Charles Murray is a director and producer whose previous credits include Marvel's Luke Cage, Things Never Said and The Devil You Know. Star Josh Brolin executive produces the series along with Zev Borow, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Brad Pitt, Heather Rae, Amy Seimetz, Robin Sweet, Lawrence Trilling and Tony Krantz. The debut season comprised of eight episodes while season 2 is one episode shorter, totaling seven episodes.

Josh Brolin leads the series as Royal Abbott. Outer Range marked a return for the actor to television after a 20 year hiatus following the failure of NBC's drama Mister Sterling. Brolin is best known for his work in such celebrated titles as The Goonies, No Country for Old Men and as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Is Outer Range based on Yellowstone?

Despite sharing similar themes with the Paramount+ original series starring Kevin Costner, Outer Range is not based on or related to the Yellowstone series.
