Following the 2014 clash between Godzilla and the MUTOs, which devastated San Francisco and revealed the existence of monsters, two siblings carry on their father's work. They uncover their family's connections to the group Monarch, leading them into the world of monsters and to Army officer Lee Shaw. The story unfolds in two timelines, the 1950s and fifty years later, where Shaw's knowledge becomes a threat to Monarch.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 is the first season of Apple TV+'s action-thriller series from Chris Black and Matt Fraction. It is a part of the MonsterVerse franchise by Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures, featuring the iconic Godzilla character from Toho. It's the franchise's second TV show, following the Netflix anime series Skull Island. The series follows Monarch members' encounters with Godzilla and other massive creatures known as "Titans" over five decades after the 2014 film. The MonsterVerse's film series began with 2014's Godzilla and includes Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Chris Black, known for his work on TV shows like Xena: Warrior Princess, Star Trek: Enterprise, and Desperate Housewives, also serves as an executive producer for Apple TV+'s popular series Severance. Matt Fraction, a renowned comic book writer with credits such as "The Invincible Iron Man" and "Uncanny X-Men," is part of the writing team for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which also includes Black, Andrew Colville, Karl Taro Greenfeld and Mariko Tamaki. Directors on the series includes Matt Shakman, Mairzee Almas, Andy Goddard, Julian Holmes, and Hiromi Kamata.
Kurt Russell takes on the role of Lee Shaw in the series, with his son Wyatt portraying the character in his younger years. They are joined by Anna Sawai as Cate Randa, Kiersey Clemons as May, Ren Watabe as Kentaro, Mari Yamamoto as Keiko, Joe Tippett as Tim and Elisa Lasowski as Duvall. John Goodman reprises his role as Bill Randa from Kong: Skull Island, with Anders Holm portraying the younger version of the character.
