King's Landing serves as home for House Targaryen, the dominant family governing the Seven Kingdoms. However, their authority is constantly endangered by external enemies and internal contenders within the family, vying for control of the Iron Throne. Loyalties shift and the specter of war hangs over the realm. The question remains: can the Targaryens and their formidable dragons maintain their supremacy in Westeros?
House of the Dragon season 2 is the second season of the fantasy-drama TV series created by Ryan Condal and George R. R. Martin for HBO. It is based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book franchise and serves as a second adaptation of the novels after the juggernaut HBO series, Game of Thrones.
Drawing from sections of Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set approximately a century following the unification of the Seven Kingdoms through the Targaryen Conquest. It takes place almost two centuries prior to the events of Game of Thrones and 172 years preceding the birth of Daenerys Targaryen.
Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik took on the roles of showrunners during season 1. However, Sapochnik stepped down from the position following the first season, granting Condal the sole responsibility of showrunning for the second season. Additionally, Alan Taylor joined the team as an executive producer and directed several episodes.
The highly anticipated series premiere, directed by Sapochnik, captivated a massive audience of 25 million viewers in its first week of release in 2022. This remarkable achievement not only garnered immense popularity but also played a pivotal role in securing a swift renewal for the prequel series, as the renewal decision was made within just five days of its release.
Emma D’Arcy reprises her role as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. Other returning cast members include Olivia Cooke as Rhaenyra's childhood best friend turned stepmother, Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower and Matt Smith portraying Prince Daemon Targaryen. New additions to the season include Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers, Simon Russell Beale portraying Ser Simon Strong, Freddie Fox playing Ser Gwayne Hightower and Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull.
House of the Dragon premiered on Max in the United States and on Crave in Canada on June 16, 2024.
