Synopsis
In the 1960s, an enigmatic grifter plots his most complex con yet
Tom Ripley is a young, handsome, and charismatic man with quiet ambitions and a persuasive manner. While Patricia Highbottom's The Talented Mr. Ripley has been adapted multiple times, Ripley still manages to differentiate itself from other takes. Part of the allure is the stunning cinematography as it captures its gorgeous Italian setting, and its black-and-white color scheme matches the series' tone. The other part is watching Andrew Scott chillingly embody the darkness of Mr. Ripley as the show dives deeper into the character's twisted psyche than ever before. Ripley is a psychological thriller television series based on the book, The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. Ripley is written and directed by Steven Zaillian, a filmmaker known for the miniseries, The Night Of, as well as movies such as All the King’s Men and Searching for Bobby Fischer. The series features cinematography from Academy Award-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit.
Ripley features an all-star cast led by Irish actor Andrew Scott. He has had starring roles in series such as Sherlock, Fleabag, and Oslo and here takes on the main role of Tom Ripley. Johnny Flynn, star of Lovesick and Stardust, plays Dickie Greenleaf. While award-winning actress Dakota Fanning plays the role of Marge Sherwood. The expanded cast includes Eliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy, and John Malkovich. Ripley was released on Netflix on April 4, 2024.
