In 1944, the Second World War rages on as U.S. soldiers touch down in Normandy, France. Captain John Miller has been tasked with recovering a fallen soldier who is trapped behind enemy lines, Private James Francis Ryan. Captain Miller and his detachment dangerously track their compatriot, whose three brothers have already died in combat elsewhere. In order to prevent the family another loss, Private Ryan must be recovered and sent home.
