The release of Godzilla Minus One in 2023 signified a return to the kaiju’s roots in more ways than one. It marked the first film since 2018 from Godzilla’s original creator, Toho Studios. The Japanese studio has taken a bit of a backseat the past few years to allow Warner Bros. and Legendary to create the shared cinematic universe, the MonsterVerse, centered on Godzilla, King Kong, and other kaiju.
Godzilla Minus One wasn't just a return to Toho but to the setting of the very first Godzilla movie in 1954. Like the original, the film follows Godzilla descending upon a postwar Japan. While it’s not technically a remake or reboot, it does feel a lot like a modern reimagining of the original film that delves deeper into the state of postwar Japan.
Meanwhile, the response to Godzilla Minus One was overwhelmingly positive. The film’s success and the nostalgia it packs into its familiar premise are bound to raise interest in Godzilla’s history. Fortunately, viewers looking for more Godzilla content shouldn’t have any problem finding some. As mentioned above, Toho has been making Godzilla movies since 1954.
American audiences will most likely be familiar with the MonsterVerse, which started with Godzilla (2014). So far, the MonsterVerse encompasses three Godzilla films, with a fourth arriving next year. These films are all interconnected and set in the same universe. However, Toho’s Godzilla franchise isn’t as simple as the MonsterVerse, as it has dozens of more films, and not all of them are connected.
Toho’s Godzilla franchise can be broken down into five eras: the Shōwa era (1954 - 1975), the Heisei era (1984–1995), the Millennium era (1999–2004), and the Reiwa era (2016–present). Some films within these eras will be interconnected, but most are standalone. When they are connected, they are usually released in chronological order within the era. The lack of continuity means watching in order of release date is the most straightforward viewing order. For example, Godzilla Minus One is chronologically the first film in the Reiwa era, but because it is a standalone movie, it doesn’t change much if one watches it last in the era based on its release date.
An alternative viewing order is if viewers want to watch the MonsterVerse films separately. In this case, viewers would watch Godzilla (2014), Godzilla King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire separately from the rest of the films on the release date-ordered list below.
