Transatlantic is an upcoming period drama series produced by Netflix and Airlift Productions. The series is based on the novel by Julie Orringer, The Flight Portfolio, a fictionalised account of the true story of Varian Fry’s work with the Emergency Rescue Committee in France during the 1940s that resulted in the rescue of over 2,000 Jewish refugees. The series is created by Anna Winger, who also made Netflix’s award-winning 2020 mini-series Unorthodox.
Cory Michael Smith stars as Varian Fry, the American journalist who travels to southern France in 1940 to help the refugees. Gillian Jacobs plays Mary Jayne Gold, an American heiress and Fry’s accomplice. Deleila Piasko plays Lisa Fittko, a jewish refugee herself who helped others across the Pyrenees into Spain at great personal risk. Lucas Englander plays the German-Jewish Albert Hirschman, an economist working for the Emergency Rescue Committee alongside Fry. Ralph Amoussou plays Paul Kandjo, a character created for the series who works in a hotel in the south of France and gradually becomes more involved in the resistance movement. The rest of the cast includes Amit Rahav as Thomas Lovegrove, Grégory Montel as Philippe Frot, Luke Thompson as Hiram ‘Harry’ Bingham, and Corey Stoll as Patterson.
