Mary Elizabeth (M.E) and Rene are best friends of different races. They grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Rene leaves Birmingham to pursue a successful law career, while M.E falls pregnant with her boyfriend and stays in her hometown. When Rene returns to where she grew up years later, the pair resume their friendship, and learn how the past always has a say in the present.
