In a rare, but much deserved lead role for Kelly Marie Tran, the Star Wars actor takes a bite out of this unsettling horror that weaves in Vietnamese folklore to stand out as something more unique in a busy genre. Tran isn't afraid to get weird here, and it's just as well. Horror isn't supposed to be neat and tidy, and that's something Control Freak knows inside out, freaking audiences out with disturbing twists that will have you itching in your seat. You won't forget this one in a hurry., whether you want to or not.

It’s so refreshing to see a horror that tips all the tropes of the genre into the bin and attempts something different and more profound, without losing what makes gore and fantasy so thrilling in the first place. Control Freak’s simple initial idea - an itch that can’t be scratched - soon splinters into stories about addiction, paranoia and inherited guilt, all of them based inside the mind of the main character. That means it needs a great lead performance, and Kelly Marie Tran’s fiery but sensitive turn is perfect. You’ll be thinking about this one for a long time after you see it.
