With its titular acronym standing for Kolar Gold Fields, the K.G.F movies are set in the midst of the criminal and political nexus around the gold mined from Karnataka’s mineral-rich town Kolar. Both movies double as period dramas with the first movie’s events taking place from the 1950s to the 1970s. K.G.F: Chapter 2 takes the narrative further by delving into the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Kannada superstar Yash stars as the franchise’s antiheroic face Rocky Bhai, an underdog who rises up the ranks of Mumbai’s gold mafia in the first part. Establishing his dynamic charisma and penchant for violence, Rocky is then assigned to assassinate the inheritor of the Kolar Gold Fields, driving him to reconnect with his past in Karnataka.
The second part finds him against odds with his previous target’s brother Adheera (played by Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt). The scope also expands to incorporate national politics with Raveena Tandon playing an authoritarian Prime Minister (a subtle nod to ex-Indian PM Indira Gandhi).
In the course of two movies, the K.G.F franchise has broken box-office records, won several acting, directing, and stunt choreography accolades, and turned into a pop culture phenomenon on social media.
Will there be a K.G.F Chapter 3?
While director Prashant Neel moved on to a new franchise with Salaar, a third K.G.F movie is still on the cards as is evident from the post-credits scene of K.G.F: Chapter 2. With a CIA Agent handing over a file of Rocky’s international crimes to the Prime Minister and a peon finding a draft titled “KGF Chapter 3”, it’s clear that we will get a third movie sometime in the future.
Considering that K.G.F: Chapter 2 is still the second-highest grossing Indian movie of all time, it is also marketable enough to convert the two movies into a full-fledged trilogy.
