After a six-hour-long livestream, Marvel has finally announced the ambitious lineup for its upcoming Avengers adventure. Avengers: Doomsday not only finds Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame, Infinity War) returning as directors but it also brings back many familiar faces in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from Chris Hemsworth to Anthony Mackie.
Considering how the Fox X-Men movies are also canonically connected to the MCU now, many beloved actors from that franchise are also expected to return. The first Avengers release since 2019’s Endgame, Avengers: Doomsday will revolve around the villain Doctor Doom wreaking such havoc that the usual Avengers will have to team up with other classic Marvel teams like the Fantastic Four and the X-Men.
So, without any further ado, let’s look at the biggest names from the Avengers: Doomsday lineup.
Chris Hemsworth (Thor)
The Australian hunk returns as the Norse god of thunder after having played major roles in all of the Avengers movies before. Over the years, he has evolved from a moody demigod to a more light-hearted guardian of Asgard. The last that we saw him was in Thor: Love and Thunder in which he came to terms with his post-Endgame reality and had adventures alongside his former love interest Jane Foster (who had briefly become Lady Thor in the movie).
Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America)
While Anthony Mackie joined the MCU as the winged hero Falcon, he took on the Captain America shield after the events of Endgame. Mackie’s Sam Wilson was last seen in 2025’s first MCU release, Captain America: Brave New World. The film found him dealing with a government conspiracy that involves the American President, secret organisations, and even the Red Hulk. Given his increasing importance in the franchise, Sam Wilson can be a major leader in Avengers: Doomsday.
Sebastian Stan (Bucky/Winter Soldier)
From Captain America’s best friend to a brainwashed villain to an antihero, Bucky has come a long way in the MCU. Loyally standing by Sam Wilson’s side, Bucky last appeared in a cameo in Captain America: Brave New World. But this won’t be his only MCU appearance in 2025 as he also has a major role to play in the upcoming Thunderbolts*. Bucky is expected to join the titular team of antiheroes who specialise in covert operations that even the Avengers stray away from.
Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova)
Black Widow’s younger sister Yelena Belova was last seen in the series finale of Hawkeye. Throughout the show, she sought revenge against Hawkeye believing that he killed her sister. But after making her peace, she walks her own way and continues to be a mysterious antihero in the MCU. Before Avengers: Doomsday, she will also be seen in Thunderbolts* as one of the leaders of the titular team.
Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man)
Paul Rudd has offered some of the MCU’s funniest moments with his take on the mini-sized superhero Ant-Man. Last seen battling Kang and his multiple variants in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it will be interesting to see how Rudd’s likeable hero evolves in Avengers: Doomsday. He was largely absent in action in the previous Avengers films. So, hopefully, Doomsday will beef up his runtime.
Simu Liu (Shaun/Shang-Chi)
The MCU’s martial artist hero Shang-Chi is a master of mystical fighting and he'll be back with a bang, with Simu Liu reprising his role in Avengers: Doomsday. The last we saw of Shang-Chi was in his MCU debut, the origin film Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings. The film saw him discovering his powers, going against his rogue father, and eventually teaming up with Avengers like Bruce Banner (Hulk) and Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) in a post-credits scene.
Letitia Wright (Shuri/Black Panther)
After the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther storyline in the MCU massively changed with new developments in Wakandan politics. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Letitia Wright’s brilliant inventor Shuri took on the mantle from her late brother T’Challa (Boseman). Wright will be back donning her tech-driven, vibranium-coated Black Panther costume in Avengers: Doomsday.
Tom Hiddleston (Loki)
Despite being shockingly killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Loki returned in his standalone Disney+ series, also called Loki. The Asgardian god of mischief and Thor’s half-brother redeemed himself from scheming villain to emotional hero in this series, eventually fixing many faults in the MCU timeline. With all the time-traveling chaos he has gone through, Loki’s presence will be of chief importance in Avengers: Doomsday.
Patrick Stewart (Professor X/Charles Xavier)
Patrick Stewart starred in several of the X-Men films as Professor X, the telepathic teacher who started a school for gifted mutants. Back when rumours were swirling for the X-Men appearing in the MCU, Stewart’s Charles Xavier appeared as an alternate universe version in a special scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While that version is dead now, it’s amusing to see how Stewart’s mild-mannered professor will return in Avengers: Doomsday.
Robert Downey Jr. (Doctor Doom)
In an announcement that shocked MCU fans all over the world, franchise staple Robert Downey Jr. is all set to return to the world of Avengers. But this time, he’s not playing Iron Man (who was last seen sacrificing himself to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame). Instead, the Oscar-winner will appear as Doctor Doom, the titular villain of Doomsday. How Downey Jr. will be incorporated as a different character other than Iron Man, that remains to be seen.
Who else is joining the Avengers Doomsday cast?
While the cast includes notable exceptions like Tom Holland (Spider-Man), the ensemble cast of Avengers: Doomsday is stacked, to say the least. Stars of the upcoming Fantastic Four movie are all expected to appear, from Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman) to Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic). Several cast members of the Thunderbolts* movie are also expected such as David Harbour (Red Guardian) and Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost).
X-Men fans will also be excited to find several stars from the Fox X-Men movies such as Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler (last seen in X2: Men United), Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and James Marsden as Cyclops (both last seen in X-Men: The Last Stand). Additionally, even Channing Tatum’s card-wielding mutant Gambit will join the Doomsday cast. Despite not appearing in any prior X-Men movie, Tatum won over fans with his surprise cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine.
