When you think of Christmas movies, Home Alone is undoubtedly one of the first films that comes to mind. Released in 1990, the first movie follows Kevin McCallister, a sweet but mischievous eight-year-old boy who spends Christmas living out his wildest dreams after his family accidentally leaves him behind. The film showcases Kevin as he outsmarts a pair of bumbling burglars and is celebrated for its slapstick humor, Kevin's resourceful charm, and heartwarming holiday spirit.
The original Home Alone movie became the highest grossing film worldwide in its release year, and even went on to receive two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score, and Best Song for Somewhere in my Memory. While the film didn’t end up winning either of the awards, it did go on to become one of the most popular Christmas movies over the years, and has been widely regarded as one of the most wholesome Christmas movies by audiences worldwide, with many praising Macaulay Culkin's performance as Kevin McCallister.
Home Alone was soon followed by Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Set one year after the events of the first film, the sequel follows Kevin as he loses track of his family and accidentally boards a plane to New York City. Lost in one of the busiest cities in the world, Kevin cleverly cons his way into the Plaza Hotel, enjoying all the lavish perks of staying in a luxury suite—until he crosses paths with the Wet Bandits, reigniting his mischief and giving him a new sense of purpose.
Home Alone 2 was the last film to feature Macaulay Culkin as the main protagonist. The franchise took a new direction with Home Alone 3, Home Alone:The Holiday Heist, and Home Sweet Home Alone which featured an all new cast, while retaining the original premise of a young boy who cleverly defends himself against criminals after accidentally being left home alone. The franchise did try to shift focus back to the McCallister family with Home Alone 4, but this sequel differed from the first two films as Kevin was recast with a younger actor. The chronological order of the Home Alone movies is nearly the same as the release order, except you can skip Home Alone 3 and move directly to Home Alone 4 after the first two films. Otherwise, the release order begins with Home Alone and continues as follows:
- Home Alone
- Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
- Home Alone 3
- Home Alone 4
- Home Alone: The Holiday Heist
- Home Sweet Home Alone
