Additionally, the first part was also remade in Tamil as Papanasam with Kamal Haasan in Mohanlal’s role and in Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese language as Dharmayuddha and in Chinese as Sheep Without A Shepherd.
Ranking among the best Mohanlal movies, Jeetu Joseph’s cerebral 2013 thriller Drishyam found Mohanlal playing an ordinary video store owner who must defend his family from a vengeance-seeking policewoman after her son goes missing.
Building nail-biting tension from everyday situations with some splendid plot twists, Drishyam broke new ground in mainstreaming Malayalam thrillers and spawned several frame-to-frame remakes in other languages. A Korean remake was also announced in 2023, making Drishyam the first Indian movie to be remade in Korean.
In 2021, the cult hit received a direct sequel with the Prime Video release of Drishyam 2. The movie continued Mohanlal’s protagonist saving his family as the murder case from the first film is investigated further. The sequel was soon remade in Hindi, Kannada, and Telugu.
Will there be a Drishyam 3?
While Drishyam 2 wrapped up the first movie’s arc, both director Jeetu Joseph and lead actor Mohanlal have occasionally stated their interest in joining forces for a third time. Joseph has also revealed that while he has figured out the climax of Drishyam 3, the scripting and production might take him a few years.
