Masters of the Air is a war-drama miniseries created by John Shiban and John Orloff for Apple TV+. It is inspired by Donald L. Miller's 2007 book titled "Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought The Air War Against Nazi Germany" which followed the experiences of the United States Army Air Forces' 100th Bombardment Group during World War II. This unit earned the moniker "Bloody Hundredth" due to the number of casualties it suffered in combat missions.
Masters of the Air serves as a companion piece to two of the most influential works in television history - 2001's Band of Brothers and 2010's The Pacific. Hollywood legends Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg served as executive producers for both shows. While renowned producer Gary Goetzman also initially produced Band of Brothers, he later took on the role of executive producer for The Pacific. All three return as executive producers on Masters of the Air.
John Shiban is a celebrated television writer, having worked on such acclaimed titles as The X-Files, Breaking Bad, Hell on Wheels, Better Call Saul and Ozark. John Orloff previously wrote two episodes of Band of Brothers, which earned him and the writing team a Primetime Emmy Awards nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or Dramatic Special. He's also written the screenplays for A Mighty Heart and Anonymous. Masters of the Air features nine episodes helmed by five different directors. These include Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective), Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Captain Marvel), Dee Rees (Mudbound) and Tim Van Patten (The Pacific).
Austin Butler leads the miniseries as Major Gale Cleven. Butler is best known for his role in 2022's Elvis which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In a similar vein to the two previous miniseries, Masters of the Air features a vast ensemble cast. These include fellow Best Actor nominee Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin), Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Raff Law, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook, Ncuti Gatwa, Kai Alexander, James Murray, Tommy Jessop, Freddy Carter and Nikolai Kinski.
