The It's Always Sunny Gang tackles the issues of 2023 making headlines including inflation, the relationship between the U.S. and Russia, mental health, gender equality, injury liability, gun control and celebrity-endorsed products. In season 16, the characters are facing various challenges - Mac is dealing with allergies and a long-distance relationship, Charlie is reconnecting with his long-lost sisters, Dee is fighting for rent control and women's sports, Frank is struggling to keep his gun, and Dennis is attempting to improve his mental health. Despite navigating the year 2023, the characters are still grappling with the baggage from their past as some people from their history make a reappearance.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 is the sixteenth season of the black comedy sitcom TV series on FXX developed by Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton. The series initially premiered on FX from 2005-2012 until it was ultimately changed to FXX in 2013. It follows the adventures of "The Gang", a clique of self-absorbed, narcissistic pals who operate Paddy's Pub, a shabby Irish bar located in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Despite owning the bar, they spend the majority of their spare time drinking, engaging in heated debates, devising intricate schemes against outsiders and occasionally each other, all for their own benefit, monetary profit, retribution or just for amusement due to their boredom.
The series continues to have a loyal and devoted following years after its initial premiere in 2005 as evidenced by its renewal up to season 18. The release of its 15th season resulted in It's Always Sunny becoming the longest-running live-action American comedy series, surpassing The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, which held the previous record for airing 14 seasons from 1952 to 1966. That kind of success for a live-action series is unheard of yet It’s Always Sunny has managed to achieve that by consistently striving to stay current and relevant. There is a sense of intrigue attached to the series as viewers grow attached to these insane characters and want to see what unbelievable misfortunes they place onto unsuspecting people as well as themselves.
The sixteenth season of the show welcomes back the beloved cast of five composed of Rob McElhenney as Mac, Charlie Day as Charlie Kelly, Glenn Howerton as Dennis Reynolds, Kaitlin Olson as Dee Reynolds and Danny DeVito as Frank Reynolds.
