Investigative journalist Rae de Leon interviews women across the United States who reported cases of sexual assaults, and were then charged with filing false reports. Filing a false report is a criminal offence, which led to some of these women facing severe legal repercussions including prison time. de Leon has been working on this story for four years, which leads her to re-examine the handling of the cases by the police.
Rae de Leon investigates the high number of cases in the United States involving young women reporting sexual assaults who are later charged with making false accusations. Including interviews and stories from the young women and their families, alongside legal experts and police footage, the documentary sheds light on local and federal police systems in the United States that appear to paint victims as suspects when they come forward with their experiences of sexual assault.
Victim/Suspect is a Netflix investigative documentary produced by the Center of Investigative Reporting Studios and Motto Pictures. Award-winning documentary filmmaker Nancy Schwartzman (Roll Red Roll) directs the film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023.
