Synopsis
Survivors of a plane crash wait for rescue in Netflix film based on a true story
Society of the Snow tells the true story of a 1972 plane crash in the Andes mountains. Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was flying from Montevideo, Uruguay to Santiago, Chile when it crashed, carrying 45 passengers. Amongst the passengers were members of the Uruguayan rugby team who had to survive extremely harsh conditions as they waited 72 days to be rescued.

J. A. Bayona directs Netflix biopic about the 1972 Andes plane crash
Society of the Snow is a survival thriller, biographical film on Netflix. The film is directed by Spanish director J. A. Bayona, who’s previous work includes The Impossible starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor about the 2004 tsunami. Bayona also directed the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video. The film is adapted from Pablo Vierci’s Spanish-language book ‘La sociedad de la nieve (en: The Snow Society: The Definitive Account of the World’s Greatest Survival Story). Society of the Snow was also selected as the Spanish entry for the Academy Award Best International Feature Film category. The film premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival out of competition, on the final night of the festival.
The ensemble cast of Society of the Snow features many upcoming Uruguayan and Argentine actors including Enzo Vogrincic Roldán, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Tomas Wolf, Diego Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero, Rafael Federman, Felipe González Otaño, Agustín Della Corte.
