Hikaru and Yoshiki are best friends living together in a small town. But when Hikaru becomes possessed by a peculiar creature on the mountain, everything changes. The teenage boy returns looking exactly the same, but Yoshiki knows that his best friend has been body-snatched and a dangerous threat is now on the loose.

That's the crux of The Summer Hikaru Died, which envelops the the same kind of small town horror prevalent in Summertime Rendering and the unease of Heavenly Delusion. It's all to service the core relationship between Hikaru and Yoshiki and the strong LGBT themes their relationship carries, making the show an unconventional romance dripping with unease where you're constantly waiting to watch everything fall apart.
