The film is incredibly powerful, made even more so knowing that the institution actually existed and was mired by very real scandals and abuse. There’s a reason Nickel Boys earned a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars, it’s a gripping story that sheds light on an often overlooked piece of history. If you love films like Green Book or Dead Man Walking, you’ll enjoy Nickel Boys.
