Superman (2025)

Superman is a surprisingly political movie, but in 2025, it honestly feels refreshing that the superhero genre is *finally* tackling real issues in America and calling out the world for what it is. But somehow, director James Gunn doesn’t let the messaging bog down the film, and it still has this great comic book aesthetic to it that looks and feels fun. Plus, Guardians fans will definitely recognize some similarities in a few scenes where Gunn uses excellent cinematography and great music to create memorable moments. Superman is both fun and exciting, but has some real weight behind it.

One of the best superhero movies in years, and one that perfectly adapts the often optimistic, sometimes grim, and perpetually fun world of DC Comics. A strong cast breathes fresh life into their well-worn characters, finding new layers of humanity amidst the genre's typical bombast. A personal movie that builds out a universe organically instead of trying to force a franchise, Superman benefits from rooting itself to an authentically sweet defense of morality in the face of cruelty and the impossible. A truly wonderful movie that will make you feel like your heart has taken flight.

Relationships are often included in superhero films, but they're rarely centered or as unapologetically romantic as they are in Superman. From the second David Corenswet's Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane share a scene, their banter effectively leaps off the screen and sizzles all throughout. Pair their gorgeous chemistry with the secret dating trope, and Superman delivers a worthy romance that's soft, vulnerable, and so achingly hot. Yes, hot. Scorching, even, with two of the most breathtaking kisses in any superhero film that openly showcase just how remarkably suited they are.
