Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Inglorious Basterds is, somehow, a dark comedy, a gory pulp extravaganza, and a movie that focuses on historical fact, and the combination is delightful. Dark at times, but never too dark—despite the subject matter, the movie is helped by amazing performances, among them Mélanie Laurent and Christoph Waltz, who elevate a movie that could have been too much without them. It’s borderline parody at times, but Tarantino handles the tone perfectly, without letting it descend into melodrama. If you like WWII movies, or war movies in general, this one’s a must watch.

In many ways Quentin Tarantino's most ambitious film to date, Inglorious Basterds, is a rip-roaring good time. While the titular band of WWII soldiers are darkly comedic and instantly compelling, the real draw of the film comes from Mélanie Laurent's memorable performance as Shosanna and a scene-stealing Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa. A gleefully gory movie that pulls as much from grindhouse horror as historical fact, Inglorious Basterds is a delightfully dark film that never stops being a thrilling and entertaining watch.
