Updated on

Indiana Jones is the world-famous professor of archeology created by Lucasfilm’s George Lucas and Philip Kaufman. Included in this streaming guide is everything you need to know about the franchise including where to stream all the Indiana Jones movies in order.

Harrison Ford stars as the titular hero, Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones, Jr. The film franchise spans over forty years, starting with the release of the first film in 1981, Raiders of the Lost Ark. There are five films and a television series in the franchise, which has grown to include comics, games, and novels. There are also Indiana Jones amusements at Disney theme parks in Tokyo, Paris and Orlando.

Here are some details about each of the Indiana Jones movies:

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Raiders of the Lost Ark is directed by Steven Spielberg, and is Harrison Ford’s first appearance as Indiana Jones. The action-adventure film is set in 1936, as Indy and Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) face Nazi German forces in a battle for the infamous Ark of the Covenant. The screenplay is written by Lawrence Kasdan, from George Lucas and Philip Kaufman’s story.

The Temple of Doom (1984)

Acting as a prequel to the first movie, The Temple of Doom is set in 1935 Asia and begins with Indy surviving a murder attempt from a Shanghai crime boss. Harrison Ford returns along with new characters Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw), Short Round (Ke Huy Quan), Mola Ram (Amrish Puri), Chattar Lal (Roshan Seth) and British Indian Army officer Captain Philip Blumburtt (Philip Stone).

The Last Crusade (1989)

Indy returns in The Last Crusade to undertake a highly personal quest - find and rescue his father who is being held captive by the Nazis. His father, Henry Jones Sr (played by Sean Connery), is a Holy Grail scholar who was captured while trying to find the storied treasure.

The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

After almost twenty years, Indiana Jones returns with the release of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Set in 1957, Indy battles Soviet KGB agents in a race to find a telepathic crystal skull. Ford and Allen reprise their roles as Indy and Marion, with Shia LaBeouf as their son Mutt Williams and Cate Blanchett starring as KGB agent Irina Spalko.

The Dial of Destiny (2023)

The Dial of Destiny sees the introduction of Indy’s goddaughter Helena (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge). James Mangold directs Harrison Ford in his final reprisal as Indiana Jones before retirement. It is the first movie in the franchise that wasn’t directed by Steven Spielberg.

Indiana Jones TV series

There is also an Indiana Jones television show called The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Starring Sean Patrick Flanery and Corey Carrier, the prequel series explores Indy’s childhood and adolescence. The show aired on ABC between 1992 and 1993.

Potential Disney+ series

Lucasfilm began developing an Indiana Jones series for Disney+ in late 2022, which would be a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. The show was reportedly cancelled in order for Disney to focus on growing the Star Wars universe. Lucasfilm has since expressed further interest in the series which would help continue the Indiana Jones franchise after Harrison Ford’s retirement.
