The first movie Welcome continues to be a mainstream comedy classic with its quotable one-liners and sarcastic quips still actively referenced in memes and TV reruns. The crime comedy featured Akshay Kumar’s Rajeev and Katrina Kaif’s Sanjana as an ill-fated couple in the crosshairs of the latter’s brothers, the goofy gangster duo of Uday Shetty and Majnu Bhai played by Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor. The movie’s ensemble also notably features Paresh Rawal playing Kumar’s on-screen father, the simple-minded, unlucky Dr. Ghungroo.
The Welcome franchise returned with a direct sequel in 2015 sans Kumar, even as the chuckle-inducing trio of Kapoor, Patekar, and Rawal returned to reprise their roles. Yet again doubling as a rom-com and a mob movie satire, the sequel found director Anees Bazmee returning to helm the 2015 hit with new cast members including John Abraham, Shruti Haasan, and Naseeruddin Shah.
Now, with a little less than a decade later, Welcome is expected to return with a third movie Welcome to the Jungle. As is evident from the title, the setting is changed from metropolitan gang-ridden cities to a forest instead. Akshay Kumar returns to play yet another character called Rajeev even though this installment is supposed to be only a spiritual sequel.
Not directly connected to the main story of the first two movies, Welcome to the Jungle features a bigger cast with returning faces like Kumar and Paresh Rawal and new franchise joinees like Arshad Warsi, Raveena Tandon, Disha Patani, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty and many more. Unlike Welcome and Welcome Back, Aneez Bazmee isn’t returning to direct with Ahmed Khan filling his shoes.
