From Nino Rota’s haunting Godfather theme music to its iconic dialogues like “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse”, The Godfather trilogy has truly stood the test of time.
The first movie featured Marlon Brando as the aging patriarch of the Corleone family as he faces power struggles from rival New York crime families. With his reckless older son Sonny (James Caan) and his younger and relatively naive son Michael (Al Pacino) in the mix, concepts of family and morality are balanced with blood-stained violence.
The Godfather Part II serves as both a prequel and sequel, alternating between the Sicilian origins of Don Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro playing Brando’s younger version) and the present-day crisis faced by Vito’s successor Michael. Both the first two Godfather films ended up winning the Best Picture Oscar in their respective years.
The Godfather Part III was released more than a decade later covering the later years of Michael’s life as he faces a more chaotic crime empire and unstable family life. The film marked an end to the trilogy even though it got an extended alternate edition in 2020. The third movie received nominations and positive reviews but couldn’t match the iconic status of the first two movies. The Coda edition, however, significantly improved upon the movie’s shortcomings, and it’s worth a watch for diehard franchise fans.
