OMG: Oh My God!

After a decade-long wait, Akshay Kumar is all set to make his grand comeback as God in the satirical comedy Oh My God 2. The upcoming film is a sequel to the 2012 film Oh My God. A Hindi film inspired by the film The Man Who Sued God, this satirical comedy tells the story of an atheist who takes god to court after an earthquake destroys his store where he sells idols to religious worshipers. While OMG 2 is set in the same universe as its predecessor, the movie will explore an entirely new storyline, and see Akshay Kumar step into the role of a whole new deity. Keep reading to get the full scoop on OMG 2.

What is the story of OMG?

Written and directed by Umesh Shukla, Oh My God is a supernatural comedy about Kanji, a Gujrati atheist played by Paresh Rawal who despite owning a store of Hindu idols regularly makes fun of religious activities. This is, until one day a small earthquake hits the city and destroys only his store. Desperate to fix his store Kanji visits the insurance office, however, he is denied a claim as earthquakes are classified under an act of god, which isn’t covered by insurance. Saddened by this news, Kanji turns to his family and friends for help who in turn blame his atheism as the source for all of this mess.

Kanji, now furious with the world and god, takes matters into his own hands and in a bold move decides to sue god. With the help of a Muslim lawyer Hanif Querishi, Kanji is able to summon the insurance company, and several religious leaders appointed to act as representatives of god in court and moves forward with his case. Given the unusual and quirky nature of his case, Kanji’s court troubles go viral and attract the attention of several religious fundamentalists who attack him to drop the matter. Abandoned by his family, Kanji is all alone and in mortal danger, when a real-estate agent named Krishna (Akshay Kumar) comes to his rescue and saves him from the angry mob. Thereafter, Krishna and Kanji become fast friends, and Krishna is often seen advising Kanji on how to proceed with his case. With Krishna by his side, Kanji’s luck begins to turn and he ends up receiving a huge wave of support from other humans who also suffered losses caused by acts of god and inturn winning the court case.

The victory of the court case leads to overnight fame for Kanji, and the religious leaders he fought the case against look at his fame as a business opportunity and end up building a temple to worship him, thereby collecting millions in tax-free donations. Witnessing this play out, Krishna reveals that he is actually a god posing as a human being to Kanji by paralyzing him and fixing him in an instant to prove his supernatural abilities. Krishna and Kanji then get into a long philosophical discussion about the entire human existence, which ends with Krishna stating his distaste over the commercialization of spirituality. Krishna urges Kanji to use his newfound fame to lead his followers to seek for spiritual guidance within themselves rather than at the feet of a temple. Kanji, in full agreement with Krishna’s beliefs, follows suit by breaking his own idol and preaching Krishna’s message forward bringing this satirical comedy to a close.

Is Paresh Rawal in OMG 2?

While Paresh Rawal won’t be reprising his role in Oh My God 2, fans do have an interesting new pairing to look out for as the renowned actor Pankaj Tripathi will be stepping in to take his place in the sequel. In addition to a new leading actor, the producers also had to rope in another writer/director as Umesh Shukla, the man behind the first film could not come onboard due to a scheduling conflict. The sequel is written and directed by Amit Rai. Aside from Akshay Kumar, fans can expect to see a lot of new characters, and a completely new storyline, which brings us to our next question.

What is the second part of OMG about?

Taking a complete 180 degree approach from its predecessor, Oh My God 2 follows the supreme being Krishnakant Tiwari played by Akshay Kumar, who will be returning to the screen as a whole new deity, Lord Shiva, as he comes down to earth to answer the prayers of one of his most loyal follower Kanti Mudgal (Pankaj Tripathi).

As per the trailer, we know that Lord Shiva who goes by the alias of Krishnakant Tiwari will return to Earth to help one of his most devoted followers Kanti save his son, after he tried to harm himself. Much like its predecessor this film will explore the themes of spirituality, the commercialization of religion, and the importance of questioning age-old beliefs. The movie also recently released the video for the song Oonchi Oonchi Wadi, where you can see Krishnakant Tiwari emerging from a river and watching over Kanti and acting as his guardian angel.

When will OMG 2 release?

Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi’s upcoming film recently found itself in the spotlight as the news of its potential ban started surfacing after the censor board stalled giving the film a greenlight to release. However, leading actor Akshay Kumar put an end to these rumors two days ago by sharing a poster of the upcoming film, and announcing the release date. The film will be sharing its release with Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 on 11th August, 2023.

Akshay Kumar’s release date announcement was closely followed by the song release of Oonchi Oonchi Wadi, a soft soulful song that’s got audiences hooked by the ear. As the release date inches closer, we’re excited to see what next is in store for the promotions of this hilarious almighty production.
