Season 13 finds interim DA Nora Lewin replaced by DA Arthur Branch (Fred Dalton Thompson), whose home-fried conservatism quickly finds itself at odds with the intense liberalism of ADA Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) and the studied seriousness of McCoy's assistant Serena Southerlyn (Elisabeth Rohm). Meanwhile, as the friction between detectives Lennie Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Eddie Green (Jesse L. Martin) manifests itself into a unique relationship with every murder scene, the detectives' sober-sided superior, Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson), develops a wry light-heartedness unlike any. As always, the series thrills with stories based on actual events and persons. The aftermath of 9/11, the saga of 'American Jihad' John Walker Lindh, the shoplifting trial of actress Winona Ryder, the Lacy Peterson murder case, the Martha Stewart inside-trading imbroglio and the 'D.C. Snipers' case all become fodder for the flames.
