Trailblazer Shirley Chisholm was the first Black Congresswoman and the first Black woman to run for president in the United States. Shirley follows Chisholm’s 1972 presidential campaign, and her unwavering commitment to equality in America. Oscar winner Regina King stars in Shirley Chisholm biopic on Netflix
Shirley is a political biopic-drama film, based on the life of the US’ first Black Congresswoman, Shirley Chisholm. Produced by Participant and Royal Ties Productions, the film is distributed on Netflix. John Ridley, who won the Academy Award winner for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on 12 Years a Slave, writes and directs the film. Ridley produces alongside Anikah McLaren, Elizabeth Haggard and Regina King. Jeff Skoll and Ted Gidlow executive produce. In 2018, Amazon Studios previously had a Shirley Chisholm biopic in development, with Viola Davis set to produce and star.
Academy Award winner Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) stars as Shirley Chisholm, the boundary-breaking politician at the heart of the story. Lance Reddick (John Wick), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Christina Jackson, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Missick, Amirah Vann, W. Earl Brown, André Holland and Terrence Howard make up the film’s cast.
