Dai Miyamoto plays basketball at his middle school, until he receives a gift that changes his entire life. When his brother Masayuki gives him a saxophone, he trades athletics for music and practises playing the sax at all hours of the day and night. Dai then leaves his hometown for the big, bustling music scene in Tokyo. He persuades his friend Shunji, and together with professional pianist Yukinori, the trio form a jazz band that draws attention from audiences around the city.
Blue Giant is a music-centred anime movie, adapted from the award-winning eponymous manga which ran from 2013-2016. The film is directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, who is best known for Deca-Dence, Mob Psycho 100, and Death Parade. After working together on Deca-Dence, Tachikawa teams up with Japanese animation studio, NUT, for Blue Giant. Manga creator Shin-ichi Ishizuka pens the screenplay with NUMBER 8, with the film distribution handled by TOHO animation.
Yûki Yamada voices protagonist Dai Miyamoto, the boy who trades basketball for dreams of becoming a jazz saxophone player. Shôtarô Mamiya voices Yukinori Sawabe with Amane Okayama as Shunki Tamada.
