What to know

Tron reboot sees Jared Leto in titular role from Kon-Tiki co-director

Tron: Area is an upcoming sci-fi adventure film directed by Joachim Rønning for Walt Disney Pictures. It serves as a reboot of the Tron franchise which includes the original 1982 entry and 2010 sequel. Although the initial plan was to craft a sequel to Tron: Legacy, it was ultimately decided the franchise would move ahead with a reboot. Rønning is a Norwegian filmmaker best known for helming the 2012 historical drama Kon-Tiki with Espen Sandberg which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. The screenplay for Tron: Ares is written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne from a story by original Tron writers, Bonnie MacBird, and director Steven Lisberger. Wigutow has previously written It Runs in the Family while Thorne crafted the screenplays for Enola Holmes and its sequel.

Frequent David Fincher collaborator, Jeff Cronenweth, handles the cinematography on Tron: Ares. He is an Oscar-nominated cinematographer whose previous credits include Fight Club, The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl.

Jared Leto leads the film as Ares. The Oscar winner is best known for his role in Dallas Buyers Club and Suicide Squad. Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins and Jeff Bridges round out the cast.
