Drop (2025)

What I hope is that it gives people pause in terms of how they communicate with strangers. Often because people can hide behind technological anonymity, they feel like they have some kind of permission to, in some cases, be really abusive and that’s not okay, so I’m kind of hoping that’s a conversation that people have. I’m a giant Hitchcock fan, I always have been, and I thought that this felt like a modern Hitchcock movie, and I also really wanted to try and bring back the ‘90s thriller which I think has been really absent from cinema.

I was lucky enough to get invited to the 'Drop’ premiere at SXSW, and it was hands-down my favorite movie of the entire festival. It definitely feels like a spiritual sequel to Wes Craven’s ‘Red Eye’ and sees a young mother trapped in a rooftop restaurant, getting Airdrops sent to her phone from a stranger with nefarious intentions. ‘Drop’ is loaded with suspense and even has a fun whodunnit vibe thanks to its mysterious sender. The movie is a seriously good time, especially for Blumhouse fans. Trust me, you’re gonna love it.

Bolstered by excellent direction, a strong script, and some incredible performances, Drop is a tight little thriller that is more than worth the price of admission. Focusing on a widowed mother going on her first date in years, Drop twists her night upside down when a mysterious figure keeps messaging her and threatening her son's life if she doesn't murder her date. The creative framing turns a largely one-setting film into a visual feast while the cast are all perfectly in-tune with the aesthetic and tone. One of 2025's most entertaining films, Drop is the perfect kind of throwback.

Drop transforms a seemingly ordinary first date into a high-stakes game of survival. The story follows Violet, who ventures back into the dating world after some personal trauma. But things go sideways when she starts receiving threatening airdrop messages. The film's strongest points are definitely its claustrophobic restaurant setting and Meghann Fahy's portrayal of the tormented Violet. Although the plot comes across as a little far-fetched at times, the film is thoroughly entertaining because it allows the suspense to build organically without relying too heavily on flash and spectacle.
