James Bond Movies in Order: Where to Watch Every 007 Adventure

Updated on

The James Bond film franchise got its start in 1961, when Eon Productions set about adapting novelist and journalist Ian Flemmings’ book series about a handsome, suave secret agent who takes on the riskiest missions for the British government. While Flemming wrote twelve 007 novels and two short stories featuring the character, the film series has expanded to 27 installments, and counting. With this guide, we'll show you how to watch James Bond movies, organized in release order.

Bond. James Bond. Seven actors have taken on the role of 007, with the first portrayal by Sean Connery in Dr. No solidifying the character’s legendary status as a skilled spy, a ruthless killer, and a confident philanderer. Connery played the character in the first five films (1961–1967), and returned to the role two more times in later years, including in 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever and 1983’s Never Say Never Again. However, devoted Bond fans should note that Never Say Never Again takes place in a different continuity.

After Connery’s first five films, two actors took one-time cracks at the part. This includes George Lazenby’s portrayal in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and David Niven starring in the parodic adaptation of Casino Royale in 1967, which also doesn't take place in Eon Productions' continuity.

In 1972, the era of Roger Moore’s Bond began with Live and Let Die. He went on to play 007 in five more films between 1972 and 1983, returning in 1985 for A View to Kill. Timothy Dalton starred in the role in two films (The Living Daylights, License to Kill) before Pierce Brosnan took over the role in 1994. Brosnan’s portrayal, from GoldenEye to Die Another Day, brought new life to the franchise and ushered in a new generation of fans. When Daniel Craig took over in 2005, fans new and old were dazzled by the high speed chases, exotic locations, and Craig's reckless portrayal of the character. While Craig officially signed off after his fifth film with 2021’s No Time to Die, fans patiently continue to await the franchise's latest reinvention of Bond.
